About the treatment

The upper lip is a small stretch of skin with a large presence. It frames your smile and sits at the centre of every photograph. Upper lip laser hair removal in Richmond, BC offers a quieter way to care for it, using light directed at the follicle to support long-lasting hair reduction over a considered course of sessions.

Each visit is calibrated to your skin tone and hair type and guided by a skin expert as part of our women’s laser service at Studio Chique, a med spa in Hamilton, Richmond.

The benefits

Benefits of upper lip laser hair removal

Most clients come to this treatment because of the shadow. Under bright lighting or on a video call, fine dark hair above the lip can read as a faint line that concealer never quite softens. Over a course of sessions, laser can help reduce that line, so the area looks clearer with far less upkeep.

There is relief in the routine, too. Threading, waxing and bleaching all ask something of the delicate skin around the mouth, and many clients notice redness, small breakouts or a lingering sting afterwards. As regrowth becomes sparser and finer, the skin often settles, and lipstick, liner and foundation tend to sit more evenly at the edge of the lip. Results vary from person to person.

  • A brief fifteen-minute appointment
  • Can soften the shadow above the lip
  • Fewer threading, waxing and bleaching visits
  • Calibrated to your skin and hair
  • Spaced to the facial hair cycle
  • Makeup may sit more evenly

What is upper lip laser hair removal?

Upper lip laser hair reduction works through pigment. A concentrated pulse of light passes through the skin and is drawn to the melanin in each hair, where it becomes heat. That warmth travels down to the follicle and is designed to weaken its capacity to grow a new hair.

The treated area is precise: from just beneath the nose to the border of the lip, and outward to the corners of the mouth. Lip hair is often fine yet dark, which is exactly what creates a soft shadow. Because the laser relies on pigment, it is generally not effective on white, grey, red or very light blonde hair, and dark hair on lighter skin tends to respond most clearly.

Who is upper lip laser hair removal for?

This treatment suits anyone with visible, darker hair on the upper lip, sometimes described as moustache hair, who would prefer fewer threading or waxing appointments. It also suits skin that reacts to depilatory creams or facial bleach.

Lip hair is often shaped by hormones, so it may become more noticeable after pregnancy, around perimenopause or with conditions such as PCOS. If you notice hair across several areas of the face, full face laser may be the more complete choice, and the lip pairs naturally with the chin. If you are prone to cold sores, mention it before booking, as treatment close to the mouth can occasionally prompt an outbreak.

  • Fine, dark hair on the upper lip
  • Skin that reacts to threading, waxing or creams
  • Anyone ready to set aside facial bleach
  • Hormonal lip hair that returns between appointments
  • Full schedules that call for short visits
The experience

What to expect during your upper lip laser hair removal

  1. Arrival and conversation. Your appointment is reserved for about 15 minutes. Your skin expert will usually begin with a few questions about recent sun exposure, medication and skincare, then confirm that the area is cleanly shaved and free of lip products.

  2. Calibration. Settings are typically chosen for your skin tone and the colour and density of your lip hair. You will be given protective eyewear, and you may be asked to press your lip gently over your teeth so the skin lies smooth and even.

  3. Treatment. The skin above the lip is thin and sits directly over the teeth, which makes it one of the more sensitive areas of the face. Most clients describe a quick, bright snap with each pulse. Because the area is so small, the laser work itself is usually over within a few minutes.

  4. Afterwards. A little warmth or pinkness is common and usually fades within a few hours. Most clients return straight to their day.

Results and how many sessions

Hair grows in cycles, and the laser can only reach hairs that are in their active growth phase on the day of treatment. Facial hair moves through these cycles faster than body hair, so upper lip sessions are usually spaced about four to six weeks apart. Many clients plan for around six to eight sessions, and very fine lip hair can take more.

Treated hairs often shed gradually in the weeks after a visit. Because lip hair is so often hormonal, new hairs may continue to appear over time, and occasional maintenance sessions may help keep the area clear once your main course is complete. Results vary.

Care, before and after

Preparation & Aftercare

Preparing for your appointment

Shave the upper lip the day before or the morning of your visit. A clean, single-blade facial razor is ideal: draw your lip down over your teeth to flatten the skin, glide gently in the direction of growth, then rinse with cool water. Avoid shaving over any blemish.

For several weeks before your first session, set aside threading, waxing, plucking and bleaching. The laser needs the root in place and its natural pigment intact. Keep your face out of the sun, avoid self-tan, and arrive without lipstick, liner or balm. If your routine includes retinoids or exfoliating acids, let the studio know when you book.

Aftercare

  • Mild redness or warmth for a few hours is expected.
  • A cool compress can soothe the lip if it feels warm or tender.
  • Leave the treated area free of makeup for the rest of the day where possible.
  • Wear SPF 30 or higher on your face every day between sessions.
  • For 24 hours, avoid saunas, steam and hot drinks held against the lip.
  • Between sessions, shaving is fine; avoid waxing, threading, plucking and bleaching.
  • Pause retinoids and exfoliating acids around the lip for a few days.

Before you book

  • Tell the studio if you have a history of cold sores around the mouth.
  • Tell the studio if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Tell the studio if you have taken isotretinoin (Accutane) in the last 6 months.
  • Tell the studio if your face has recent sun exposure or self-tan.
  • Tell the studio if you take any photosensitising medication.
  • Tell the studio if you have active acne, a rash or broken skin above the lip.
  • Tell the studio if you use retinoids or exfoliating acids on your face.
  • Laser is generally not effective on white, grey, red or very light blonde hair.

Your questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Another question? Call 604-731-5111 or send a message.

How much is upper lip laser hair removal?

The current price for an upper lip session is shown on this page. When you book, ask how many sessions to plan for your hair type so you can see the full course clearly.

Does laser on the upper lip hurt?

The upper lip is one of the more sensitive areas of the face, because the skin is thin and rests directly over the teeth. Most clients describe a quick, bright snap that is over within a few minutes. The sensation often softens as the hair becomes finer.

How many sessions does upper lip hair need?

Many clients plan for around six to eight sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart. Very fine lip hair can take longer. Because lip hair is often hormonal, occasional maintenance sessions may be needed later.

Can laser remove light or peach fuzz on the lip?

Laser is drawn to pigment, so it is generally not effective on white, grey, red or very light blonde hair. Darker lip hair usually responds most clearly. Your skin expert can tell you whether your hair is a good match before you begin.

Can I thread or wax my lip between laser sessions?

No. Threading, waxing and plucking remove the root that the laser needs to reach. Shave the lip instead, both between sessions and before each appointment.

Is there downtime after upper lip laser?

Most clients return to their day straight away. Any warmth or pinkness usually fades within a few hours. Where you can, keep the area out of the sun, away from heat and free of makeup until evening.
